Vovousa

Vovousa (Baieasa in Vlach) is located in the Valia Calda National Park, with remarkable natural beauty and geophysical interest, as it is located among large mountains. In particular, the surrounding area is characterized by gorges, valleys, waterfalls and lakes, precipices, beautiful forests and a wide variety of plants. Here is the famous Arkoudorema, a magnificent landscape, with unique routes in nature.

Approaching Vovousa from Flampourari, driving into the closed deep green valley of Aoos, you have the absolute feeling that you are entering the soul of the great Greek mountain range of Pindos. The village is called Vovousa from the roar of the water, from the river. The village as Aoos cuts it in two in a valley in 1.000 meters. altitude, surrounded by dense impenetrable forests with beeches, firs and black pines, is something that is not easily forgotten.

Vovousa belongs to the so-called Vlachozagoro. Today, about 80 people live here, most of whom are involved in logging. We cross the famous bridge of 1748, built by Alexios Messios and walk in the scattered neighborhoods of the village. Everywere we can see wooden buildings. The abundance of wood makes it a building material for every use: houses, warehouses, barns, stables, even wooden garages.

Vovousa is adjacent to the Valia CaldaNational Park, which in Vlach will mean awarm valley and this gives it great natural beauty and geophysical interest, as it is located among large mountains.

In particular, the surrounding area is characterized by gorges, valleys, precipices, beautiful forests and a wide variety of plants. Here is the famous Arkoudorema, so beloved by hiking enthusiasts. Valia de la Ursa, ie the valley of the bear, hosts Arkoudorema, which is a tributary of the Aoos. It originates from Valia Calda and in its path forms small waterfalls, which pour sediments, very good for diving and swimming. About 90-100 bears live in these dense forests.

Just before the entrance of the village, there is the place Kolimbi. Place name and thing, since, when there is the right height of water, in summer, visitors dive and enjoy the always cool water of Aoos.

From Vovousa you can pass to Valia Calda, through the asphalt road that goes up to Perivoli. Reaching high at the position “Stani Diza” we turn right and continue on a dirt road.

Vovousa is about 70 km away from Ioannina and about 60 km away from Metsovo. On good winter days, has a lot of snow that covers everything, creating a fairytale abience.

Another route for those who love hiking starts from Vovousa, enters a dense forest with huge black pines and through a forest road ends in Laista.
